Smith Systems Consulting Free Essays

The assignment for week two is to study three virtual organizations, choose one, and write about an information system that is critical to that organization’s business processes. The chosen organization for this paper is Smith Systems Consulting (SSC). SSC Inc. We will write a custom essay sample on Smith Systems Consulting or any similar topic only for you Order Now is a technology-driven company that offers services building and maintaining databases, designing and hosting websites, and all types of programming. This makes SSC the perfect organization to focus on because their entire business focuses on some aspect of information systems. This paper, however, will focus on how important computers are to SSC Inc. To understand how information systems affect SSC, it is necessary to first understand just what an information system is. An information system can be described as â€Å"any combination of information technology and people’s activities using that technology to support operations, management, and decision-making† (Wikipedia, 2010). Jon Jensen, instructor for the Business Systems in the IT department at University of Phoenix in Taylorsville, Utah, teaches that information systems are things that â€Å"collect, store, analyze and disseminate information for a specific purpose. An information system includes inputs and outputs. By either of these two definitions, a computer is undoubtedly an informtion system. A computer actually contains smaller classes of information systems like a processor, hard drive, and keyboard, but for the purpose of this paper they will be combined as a single item. The focus then becomes how computers are critical to the business processes of SSC Inc. A business process can be defined as â€Å"a collection of related, structured activities or tasks that produce a specific service or product (serve a particular goal) for a particular customer or customers† (Wikipedia, 2010). There are three types of business processes. 1. Management Process: This is just as it sounds. Processes involved in the management and supervision of the business. 2. Operational Process: This is the â€Å"what† of the business. What the business does, makes, sells, distributes, or the service it provides. 3. Support Process: These processes are there to support the â€Å"what† of the business. Things like payroll and accounting, inventory and supply, call centers and tech support. Management Process- Since its founding in 1984, SSC Inc. has grown from a small business of five people to a multimillion dollar enterprise employing more than 350 people. A business won’t grow to reach these numbers without great vision and leadership. Computers no doubt played and continue to play an important roll in SSC’s management processes. Software programs ran on computers help visionary leaders forcast and track the success of their ideas. Using computers, they can compare results of similar ideas in similar markets. The automation made possible by computers takes away much of the tedious labor involved in supervising so many people and makes it possible for less people to manage more. Managers are able to track statistics and numbers of their sales and production forces. Computers and software help them find areas of improvement and ways to streamline in order to cut costs in increase revenue. Of course management has been able to do these things for years, but with the help of computers, they are able to do them much faster, with less risk of human error, and without needint to hire secerataries or assistants to help with such a large workload. Operational Process-SSC Inc. is a company who specializes in technology related services. Without computers, SSC would not be able to offer any of the services they provide. They offer services such as computer programs that will allow other companies to use computers to more effictively manage their own personnel in the same ways discussed in the management process praragraph. They offer services such as database creation and database management; both of which are information systems, and would not exist without computers. SSC offers web based services such as web design and site hosting. Again, there would be no internet and no web sites to design without computers, and SSC would not be able to host sites for their clients without a computer to act as the server. With all the things computers are able to do for a business, they would be useless without the trained personnel to operate them and ensure that they perform the functions that they are designed to carry out. Thus, people become an important part of any information system and it is critical that SSC employ qualified IT professionals. Without these skilled workers, SSC would have a difficult time offering many of their services. Support Process-In a company as large and complex as SSC Inc. has become, there is an increased need for quality support. As defined above, support includes areas such as human resources, accounting and payroll, inventory and supply, and call centers and tech support. Inventory and supply aren’t as critical to SSC’s business model as accounting and tech support. Imagine tyrying to keep track of the finances for a $45 million company manually; handwritten invoices, all the possibilities for human error that could potentially cost millions of dollars. Think of the man hours involved in calculating payroll for 300 plus employees every week, and again the margin for human error. Computers make it possible for only a few people to manage these enormous tasks in less time than it would take numerous people to do it manually and with considerably less risk for human error. Tech support and call centers are invaluable to a business model such as that of SSC Inc. They are providing technical services to clients that may not be tech savvy. There needs to be a way to ensure that these clients are able to use the products and services that they are subscribing to. If SSC isn’t able to provide support for these customers, they will take their business elsewhere. Computers and trained personnel are necessary for these types of services. A trained technician may be able to remotely access a client computer and correct problems or walk the user through how to use a software program that they purchased. Computers at SSC can rout calls to available customer service personnel saving hold time and keeping customers happy. SSC can store customer data and history in a database and access this information later to batter service their customers. As this paper has shown, computers are an information system that is an essential part of the business proccesses at Smith Systems Consulting. They are used in virtually every aspect of their day to day operations from management and operations to their support processes. As the world becomes more and more technical, and businesses and communication become global, it is all the more important to integrate the use of information systems into business processes. If unable to do so, a company like SSC Inc. would soon become obsolete. However, SSC has the insight to see where the global economy is heading and has developed a business that uses informations systems to cater to the needs of an increasingly technical society. This insight has brought them great success and made them a leader in the world of information technology. Low Calorie Diet Versus Low Carbohydrate, Which Is Better free essay sample

Due to these health risks, and oftentimes for reasons of vanity, many Americans are choosing to diet. Judy Mahle Lutter, in her book â€Å"The Bodywise Women† said that fifty percent of all women in America are dieting at any given time. The number of diets advertised to combat this problem in our society can be overwhelming. Marketdata stated that in 2004, Americans spent over 46 billion dollars on diet products, more than any other country. How does a person know which diet will work best for them when they all advertise about grand results? Two of the most popular diet plans are a low-calorie diet and a low-carbohydrate diet. These two diets seem similar in concept, but they have numerous differences that should be investigated before a dieter attempts, either. Both low calorie and low carbohydrate diets both aim to force one’s body to burn fat for fuel, causing loss of body weight. We will write a custom essay sample on Low Calorie Diet Versus Low Carbohydrate, Which Is Better? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Low calorie diets are based on the process of thermodynamics, where the body burns a specific amount of fuel each day. If a person’s fuel intake is lowered through calorie control, their body will be forced to burn fuel that is already stored. This diet aims to force the body to burn calories by taking in fewer calories than your body needs to run each day. When a person does not take in enough calories through food, their body uses stored energy sources such as fat. While low calorie diets are often effective in burning some fat and causing weight loss, they can often cause the body to burn from not only fat, but also from lean tissue found in muscle mass and organs. When the body relies on muscle and organ tissue as a source of fuel the dieter could experience a condition known as â€Å"muscle wasting† and be subject to extreme fatigue. On the other hand, low carbohydrate diets are typically not low in calories; however, they also can be effective for weight loss by forcing a person’s body to burn fat. The body does this because of lack of insulin in the blood stream. Low carbohydrate diets aim to cause a person’s body to use only stored fat as a source of fuel. It does this by inhibiting insulin production when intake of carbohydrates is suspended. When insulin production is lowered, the body will begin burning stored fat for fuel. This process is called ketosis. So, unlike a low calorie diet, a low carbohydrate dieter will be less likely to burn lean tissue from muscles and organs and more likely to only lose fat. There are pros and cons to both of these types of diets. Low calorie diets can often cause the dieter hunger, but can also provide more variety. Because the amounts of calories a person on a low calorie diet can consume are significantly lower than their regular diet, dieters using this approach may often find themselves hungry. Low calorie diets allow for dieters to make any food choice as long as he or she does not exceed the calorie allotment for the day. So if they make poor food choices in the beginning of the day, they may not have many food options later in the day. There is also a risk of taking in too few calories each day, then the dieter’s body will begin to need fewer calories to survive, and they may stop losing weight. Conversely, low carbohydrate dieters rarely find hunger to be an issue, but there is very little variety in food choices. Hunger is not a problem on this diet since the dieter is allowed to eat as many of the allowed foods as he or she wants and the allowed foods tend to be heavier and more filling (bacon, eggs, butter, other meats, cheese, and cream). Cravings may become an issue for a low carbohydrate dieter since many comfort foods such as cakes, cookies, chips, popcorn, pastas, and breads are completely banned. Both of these diets, low carbohydrate and low calorie, are very popular and can be followed in a number of ways. Many weight loss companies follow a low calorie regime such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and â€Å"the special K diet†. Many foods a person can find in his or her local grocery store advertise their calorie count predominantly on the packaging, and there is a large selection of low calorie foods available at any grocer. People choosing to follow a low carbohydrate diet also have a number of different options to use as a guide, such as Atkins, South Beach, and the Protein Power Diet all follow the low carbohydrate principals. Many of these low carb diet options offer frozen meals and shakes and bars along with books or diet guides at your local grocer. Both diets have been found to be effective, and their effectiveness can be increased with regular exercise. Even though these diets have been practiced by millions of people, a potential dieter would want to discuss any changes to their diet and exercise regimen with a professional, since there are both pros and cons to each choice. For the 62 percent of Americans suffering from obesity or overweightness, losing weight, even with the right diet, can be difficult. While searching for the right diet an American will find many options, some of which will sound too easy to be true. A potential dieter should steer clear of diets that do not make sense, or seem easy. Losing weight is not easy. Since all diets are different, and if dieters do not stick with their diet choice they will likely gain back any weight lost, it is very important to research each diet before making a choice. Libation

Libation Libation Libation By Maeve Maddox A cutesy use of the word libation is becoming popular with restaurateurs. I heard a radio spot for a local eatery of no particular elegance advertising â€Å"food and libations.† Pinterest has a category called â€Å"Elegant Food and Libations,† and numerous restaurants advertising on the web offer libations. One of them has made sure that potential customers know the meaning of the L word by posting the anticipated question and its answer on its home page: What are Libations? â€Å"They are drinks!† Until the 17th century, when some classically educated young gentleman thought it would be funny to call wine intended to be drunk by his guests â€Å"libations,† the word’s standard use was to refer to an ancient religious practice. libation: noun. The pouring out of wine or other liquid in honor of a god; the liquid so poured out; a drink-offering. Libation is from the Latin verb libare, â€Å"to libate, to pour out in honor of a god.† The usual liquid to pour out in the context of honoring a god or one’s ancestors is wine or some other alcoholic drink, although a libation can be any liquid. Water is poured out by Buddhists. In ancient Rome, milk was poured out to the goddess of childbirth. In addition to being offered to deities, libations were poured out in honor of one’s ancestors. Relatives visiting a Roman necropolis might pour a libation directly onto a grave, or into pipes installed for the purpose. The practice of pouring an offering of liquid onto the ground, an altar, an amulet, or a sacrificial animal has been a part of religious practice in all parts of the world. It continues into modern times in various religious and cultural contexts. A Cuban custom is to spill a drop or two of rum, while saying â€Å"para los santos (for the saints).† A similar custom exists in the Philippines, where someone opening a bottle of rum will spill a capful, saying â€Å"para sa yawa (for the Devil).† The following rap lyrics refer to a libation practice called â€Å"tipping,† in which malt liquor is spilled on the ground in memory of the dead: â€Å"Pour out a little liquor† Pour out a little liquor for your homies 2Pak Going down the drain I’d like to keep stepping But I can’t get past the pain, I tip my 40 to your memory Take a drink and I start to think DRS Gangsta Lean Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Assignment

Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) - Assignment Example Methods by which to benchmark and enhance execution becomes the deliberate plan that grew in association with, and received by the business, at a level that makes it one of the main plans on the planet; and a driver for and implies by which to maintain solid, effective, and environment neighborly living up to expectations or living environment. Beam grasps a scope of good practices in arranging, outline, development, administration, operation, and upkeep of structures. It is adjusted to neighborhood regulations, measures and codes of practice. The beam models practices in arranging and outline. Model practices in administration, operation, and support. Practices in development and dispatching, praiseworthy best practices in meeting lawful necessities. A solid building needs to influence the soundness of its client or the earth. Pillar underlines indoor natural quality and comforts as key execution markers, with the legitimate thought of the neighborhood, provincial and worldwide ecological effects (Chung & Burnett, 1999). The BEAM plan is interesting in the way that it: Grasps an extensive variety of maintainability issues; Covers the entire life execution of structures; evaluates new structures just upon culmination, and guaranteeing real execution; Chooses BEAM Assessors arbitrarily for the venture confirmation; and Embraces administration, operation and support practices to guarantee an abnormal state of building execution (Chung & Burnett, 1999). The beam upgrades the nature of structures in Hong Kong that animate interest for structures that are more feasible. It gives an acknowledgment for enhanced execution and minimizing false claims; Give a far-reaching arrangement of execution benchmarks that can be sought after by designers and proprietors; Lessen the natural effect of structures for the entire time of the life cycle, and guarantee that ecological contemplations as incorporated for the comfortable outline and arranging stages.

Astronmy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 3

Astronmy - Essay Example (PEI) 25) Erosional activity is closely related to planetary size and distance from the Sun. Accordingly, â€Å"larger worlds also have more erosion because their gravity retains an atmosphere.† (PEI 30) In addition, the closer a planet is to the sun, the hotter it is disabling rain, snow and ice to occur and effect erosional activity. So, planets close to the Sun have less erosion. In addition, other factors such as planets having liquid water sustain more erosion; and the rotation of the planets contribute to erosion. The faster the rotation of planets, the more susceptible for erosion due to more weather and a stronger magnetic field (PEI 32). Therefore, Mercury, Venus and the Moon share the following characteristics: (1) they are closer to the Sun; (2) they are smaller in size (compared to the Earth) cooling easier and hardening earlier therefore they do not retain an atmosphere; (3) Mercury and the Moon do not have geological activities; (4) it is more difficult for hot planets to retain an atmosphere. In these regard, these planets and the moon do not have significant erosion as compared to the
